Core Web Vitals, explained as a business decision

Three metrics, one commercial question: how many visitors leave before your page becomes usable, and what is that worth per month?

Core Web Vitals, explained as a business decision

Core Web Vitals are often presented as a technical compliance exercise. They are better understood as a measure of how much friction stands between a visitor arriving and a visitor being able to act.

What the three metrics actually measure

Largest Contentful Paint measures how long until the main content appears. Interaction to Next Paint measures how long the page takes to respond when someone taps. Cumulative Layout Shift measures how much the page moves under them while they read.

In plain terms: how long until I can see it, how long until it answers me, and does it stay still. Those are the questions a visitor is implicitly asking.

Why it pays commercially

Slow pages lose visitors before your argument starts, and the loss compounds on paid traffic where you have already paid for the click. Improving speed does not add visitors; it stops you discarding the ones you have.

Search engines use these metrics as part of page experience signals. They are not the dominant ranking factor, but between two comparable pages they can decide which one is preferred.

Setting a performance budget that holds

Agree numeric limits at scope: total JavaScript, image weight per template, and a target for each vital on a mid-range mobile device. Write them into the project documentation.

Then enforce them automatically. A budget checked in a pipeline survives; a budget checked manually is forgotten by the second sprint after launch.

The usual causes, in order

Third-party scripts, unoptimised images, render-blocking fonts and client-side rendering of content that could have been server-rendered. In that order, in almost every audit we run.

Most of the win comes from removing things rather than adding optimisation. That is an uncomfortable finding when the scripts belong to a tool someone signed a contract for.
